Circa 1912 Philadelphia Athletics Hatband Tobacco Premium
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $420
Extremely rare and decorative silk hatband bearing the name and team logo of the Philadelphia Athletics (no year is listed). Over the past 40+ years, we have only seen three different teams from this scarce hatband set: the Red Sox, Giants, and A's. It is likely that these three teams represent the complete set. During the early 1900s a straw hat was the norm for any gentleman attending a ball game. Since most straw hats looked alike, it was only natural that someone would come up with a way for a fan to distinguish himself from the crowd and, at the same time, to declare his allegiance to the home club. The answer was a silk band to be worn around the top. The ornate tricolor design features an Athletics pennant in the center that is flanked on either side by a decorative motif consisting of the team's "white elephant" mascot framed by a shield and two crossed bats. The team name, "Philadelphia," is lettered below. The design is embroidered (as opposed to printed). When worn on a hat, the pennant would be featured in the front, and the team design would be seen on the sides. The silk band, which is 30 inches in length and 1.5 inches wide, displays two vertical tears on either side of the central design that were completely torn through, but have since been repaired. Numerous tiny stitch holes are also evident throughout, indicating that the piece was at one time sewn together onto another item; a few slightly larger tack-size holes are also visible. Approximately one inch is missing from the left end, which is now frayed. Technically in modest condition because of the repaired tears, it nevertheless displays, as can easily be seen, a Very Good to Excellent overall appearance. The text "Factory No. 7 3rd Dist. State N.Y." is stitched in yellow at one end of the piece. This is both a rare tobacco premium and a very attractive, ideal-for-display souvenir commemorating Philadelphia's 1910-1913 World Championship dynasty (the club won the World Series in 1910, 1911, and 1913). Though others must exist, this is the only example of this extremely rare silk we have ever seen or offered. SOLD FOR $420
