Two Turn-of-the-Century Large-Format Hand-Tinted Baseball Photos
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $420
Pair of two large-format hand-tinted oval baseball photos, each dating from the turn of the century. The first is a studio photo of a young man in uniform holding a bat. The second is a team photo, taken outdoors, picturing ten uniformed players (with an Old English "D" on their jerseys) posing together with their manager, who is dressed in formal attire. The date "6-13-06" is handwritten in what appears to be black ink at the base. The only clue as to the identity of this team is a period notation on the reverse of the frame that reads "Denner, Pa." While baseball photos from this era are not uncommon, these are notable for their size, accompanying oval frames, and the fact that each has been meticulously hand-tinted. During that era, production of such photos would have required the service of a professional photography studio, usually at great expense, which is the reason that so few examples of this style and quality are seen today. Furthermore, photos of this nature were almost always produced for prominent display at home, usually in the parlor where they could be seen by both family and friends. While the names of those pictured here will probably never be known, we can rest assured that these photographic displays held a special place in the hearts and minds of the family to which they once belonged. Both photos measure 19.75 x 13.75 inches and display a few minor abrasions around the border. In apparent Excellent condition overall. Each photo is housed in what appears to be its original wooden frame (24 x 18 inches). Total: 2 photos.
