1915 Boston Red Sox "Photographic" Scorecard with Babe Ruth!
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,560
Issued as a promotional vehicle for "S. H. Churchill & Co." (a clothing manufacturer), this baseball scorecard features portrait images of sixteen members of both the 1915 World Champion Boston Red Sox and 1915 National League Champion Philadelphia Phillies. The images are portrayed along the top border of each side of the scorecard, and even though the players are not identified by name, many are easily recognizable, including Babe Ruth, Tris Speaker, Harry Hooper, Grover Alexander, Dave Bancroft, and Eppa Rixey. The front of the scorecard features a full-length image of Ty Cobb in a batting pose, as well the name of the local company representative: "J. T. Porter, Fergus Falls, Minn." The back lists of all of the past American and National League champions, World Series winners, and the top ten batters in each league for 1915. Since Boston is listed as the 1915 World Champions, this piece was obviously issued after the World Series, maybe as late as the spring of 1916. This is one of several variations of this scorecard we have seen. A different example, featuring Walter Johnson on the cover, appeared as Lot 1246 in REA's Fall 2013 auction, where it sold for $1,066. The scorecard (14 x 5.5 inches), which has not been scored or folded over, remains in extraordinary condition given its age and fragile nature. With the exception of a small diagonal crease (partial tear) in the lower right corner (when viewed from the score-sheet side) and a tiny surface blemish along the right border of the opposite side, the scorecard is in Near Mint condition overall. This is a very scarce Red Sox piece dating from Ruth's first full season in the Majors. SOLD FOR $1,560
