1993 Joe DiMaggio Signed "$10,000" Check Made Payable to Barry Halper- PSA/DNA

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,200

Joe DiMaggio personal check, dated December 9, 1993, flawlessly signed "Joseph DiMaggio" in blue ink (grading "10"). Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, with the signature certified as "Authentic." This check, in the amount of $10,000, is especially notable for the fact that it is made out to legendary collector Barry Halper, who was one of DiMaggio's closest friends at the time. Interestingly, this check was a birthday present from DiMaggio to Halper, as noted by DiMaggio's inscription in the lower-left note line that reads "Happy Birthday." Halper has endorsed the check in black ink (grading "10") on the reverse. While DiMaggio's birthday gift of $10,000 may seem outlandish, especially given his miserly reputation, it was probably well deserved by Halper. Over the previous twenty years Barry Halper had helped arrange for DiMaggio to make millions of dollars through autograph sales, whether it was at card shows, private signings, or, the most lucrative of all, exclusive deals with card companies. In fact, it was Halper who helped launch the entire "second career" industry of signing autographs, not just for DiMaggio, but for all of the old-timers who did not become wealthy during their playing careers, but were able to earn a very significant living long after retirement due to the autograph industry. Over time, Halper had also assumed the job of DiMaggio's travel agent, chauffeur, and personal attendant, all at no expense to DiMaggio. DiMaggio and the Halper family even vacationed together, traveling to Italy. Unfortunately, shortly after writing this check DiMaggio had a falling out with Halper over a minor misunderstanding, which resulted in their not speaking to each other for a number of years. They did, however, eventually reconcile shortly before DiMaggio's passing in 1999. The check (6 x 2.75 inches), which displays normal bank cancellation stamps on the reverse, has a light vertical fold and is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA.
