1888 E223 G & B Chewing Gum Jim Whitney
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,700
Exceptional G & B Chewing Gum sample of Jim "Grasshopper" Whitney of the Washington Nationals. This G & B has never before been offered to the modern collecting world, and is, essentially, a newly discovered G & B example. We say "essentially" because the non-collecting family that has consigned this card has had it for decades, and has long known it was a great rarity. The consignor's mother contacted REA some twenty plus years ago by mail, and apparently decided it was not valuable enough to sell at that time, but carefully saved our letter of response with the card. It was recently rediscovered among family possessions. Now, decades later, we are able to offer this outstanding gem which has remained in the same family for more than 120 years! We only wish they had more, but even a single G & B is an extremely rare and significant find. Their small size (1 x 2.25 inches) and the fact that G & Bs were issued with gum as opposed to tobacco make this set one of the most distinctive of all pre-1900 baseball card issues. G & Bs are also one of the rarest of all nineteenth-century issues. The offered example presents with outstanding photo clarity, even wear to the corners, and light creasing (most noticeable on the reverse). A very rare sample in extremely pleasing (technically Good) condition from this highly regarded and very elusive set.
