1963 Jackie Robinson Signed Check - Made Out to His Mother
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,560
Personal check, dated December 25, 1963, signed by Jackie Robinson. The check, drawn on the Chemical Bank New York Trust Company, is made out to Robinson's mother, "Mallie Robinson," in the amount of $100 and is signed "Jack R. Robinson" in blue ink (grading "10") along the bottom. The preprinted names of both Robinson and his wife, Rachel Robinson, appear along the top border. Because this check is scripted entirely in Robinson's hand and is made out to his mother, it therefore features two "Robinson" signatures, making it especially desirable to autograph collectors. Mallie Robinson's blue-ink endorsement appears on the reverse. Given the date, this check almost certainly represents a Christmas gift to his mother. Accompanied by a one-page typed-signed LOA from Rachel Robinson, dated 1993, attesting to the fact that this check originates directly from the Robinson family. The check (6 x 2.75 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps on the front and reverse (not affecting Robinson's signature), as well as what appears to be a bank-related ink notation along the top border and two light vertical folds. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA.
