1888 N162 Goodwin Champions Complete SGC-Graded Set of Baseball Players (8)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,400
Complete set of all eight baseball players from the 1888 N162 Goodwin Champions set, considered by many to be the single most beautiful of all the nineteenth-century tobacco issues, each graded and encapsulated by SGC (submitted by REA). Of the eight ballplayers in the set, four are Hall of Famers (Anson, Brouthers, Keefe, Kelly) and three other were major stars of the day (Caruthers, Dunlap, Glasscock); Ed Andrews was very popular in Philadelphia but was not a star. All eight cards are extremely vibrant, with brilliant colors and crisp images, and present as Vg to Ex from the front. They have been graded modestly due to condition issues on the reverse, including album residue, minor paper loss, and writing, all flaws that are extremely common among nineteenth-century tobacco cards. SGC Condition Report: Ed Andrews (EX 60), Cap Anson (HOF, POOR 10), Dan Brouthers (HOF, FAIR 20), Bob Caruthers (FAIR 20), "Sure Shot" Dunlap (POOR 10), Jack Glasscock (POOR 10), Tim Keefe (HOF, POOR 10), and Mike "King" Kelly (HOF, FAIR 20). This lot offers a rare opportunity to acquire an extremely attractive yet still relatively affordable complete set of one of the most desirable of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues. The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grades is $3,350. Total: 8 cards. SOLD FOR $5,400
