1930 Walter Johnson Signed Baseball with Original Box
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,300
Official American League (Barnard) ball signed by Walter Johnson and four other players. Johnson has scripted his name in black fountain pen across the sweet spot, with the signature grading "8/9." The date, "Jan 31th 1930," is printed in black fountain pen on a side panel. The other four names on the ball, each scripted in black fountain pen on a separate side panel are Ralph Schneider, Billy Smith, Jimmy Bryan, and Billy Mack. This ball and its original box are accompanied by a notarized one-page typed-signed letter of provenance from Andrew Schneider, who is the grandson of Ralph Schneider (one of the four other individuals who signed the ball). According to Andrew Schneider, this ball originates from his great-grandfather Ben Downs, who owned a bar in Springfield, Ohio, that was frequented by Walter Johnson. Downs' daughter married Ralph Schneider, who, coincidentally, later played for the Springfield Chicks, a minor-league affiliate of the Washington Senators. Over the years the ball was then passed down through each generation of the Schneider family, ending with Andrew. As noted in the letter, the ball was also accompanied by a statue, but the statue is not offered here. The ball displays light-to-moderate soiling and is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. The box, which has a number of moderate creases and tiny edge tears, is in Very Good condition. (The name "Walter Johnson" is written in black ink on the underside of the box lid in an unknown hand). Total: 2 items (ball and original box). Full LOA from PSA/DNA and LOA from James Spence/JSA. SOLD FOR $3,300
