1918 George Wright Signed Waiver Notice

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,920

Document page, dated January 2, 1918, and originating from a Wright & Ditson company minute book (titled "Waiver Of Notice Of Meeting"), signed by George Wright and three other directors of the company, including "Honest John" Morrill (former player and manager of the Boston Red Stockings, 1876-1890). Wright's signature, "Geo. Wright," has been scripted in black fountain pen and grades "9." The other three signatures grade "9" on average. Signature examples of Hall of Fame shortstop George Wright (1847-1937) are rare. The fact that the offered signature appears on a Wright & Ditson company document makes it especially desirable. The recent find of the Wright & Ditson document archives (from which this piece directly originates) is an extraordinary once-in-a-lifetime event providing a small number of authentic George Wright signatures with remarkable provenance. George Wright was one of the dominant baseball figures of the nineteenth century. Considered baseball's first "superstar," Wright was the top player on the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings, baseball's first all-professional team, and later starred with Boston's entry in both the National Association and National League, leading the two clubs to a combined six pennants in seven years. He retired in 1882 and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1937, the year of his death. The document (8 x 11 inches) has been glued onto a larger ledger sheet (8.25 x 13.5 inches) that includes another company document on the reverse (signed by the company secretary). The process of adhesion has resulted in minor rippling and a few moderate creases. A few moderate edge tears affect the ledger page. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA.
