1920s Ty Cobb Signed Photographic Presentation Display

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,200

Presented is an outstanding example of one of the premier Ty Cobb signed items. These exceedingly rare photographic folio displays were produced in the 1920s by Ty Cobb himself for use as special presentation gifts to friends. (The fact that they were only given to Cobb's friends may, all by itself, explain their great rarity.) The high-quality folio display is designed as a folder that opens to reveal two photographic prints of Cobb (one in uniform, one in formal attire) that have each been individually mounted upon brown parchment. The mounted photo of Cobb in uniform is affixed to the left page, while the photograph featuring him in formal attire is affixed to the right page. The cover of the folder reads “Souvenir Photos of Ty Cobb – The World’s Greatest Ball Player” (modesty was never Cobb’s strong suit). Cobb has inscribed the piece, “Very Truly – Ty Cobb,” in black fountain pen (grading “6”) between the two photos. This extremely substantial item has always been recognized as one of the ultimate early Cobb-signed items. The reason why this rare piece is known only by advanced collectors today is because it is so unique that it does not quite fall neatly into one category of collecting. We have seen several examples over the years, and would guess that fewer than ten of these signed presentation folios are known. This is just the second we have offered in the last ten years. The folder (6.25 x 9.25 inches; folded) is in Good condition overall. The covers have been torn at the spine and repaired by clear tape along the interior. The cover also displays a number of other small tears, including a diagonal tear that has also been repaired by clear tape on the interior. The interior insert section, featuring the two mounted photos, has had professional restoration to a complete split along the spine and displays a number of small tears along the edges (including chips), as well as a small tear to the photo of Cobb dressed in formal attire. The piece has been displayed in such a manner that the cover (folded) and insert are now separated and matted together so that both can be viewed in their entirety. Total dimensions: 24 x 14 inches.
