1991 Topps Desert Shield Complete Set on Six Uncut Sheets

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $6,000

Complete 792-card set of 1991 Topps Desert Shield baseball offered on six uncut final production sheets, each containing 132 cards. Topps produced the 1991 Desert Shield set at the same time it produced its regular set in 1991 but with the special purpose of distributing the cards to members of the military stationed in the Middle East as part of Operation Desert Shield. The cards, differentiated from regular-issue cards by a gold foil stamp on the card front, caused quite a frenzy upon their release (reportedly limited to 6,500 sets) as cards were scattered across the world, but many did wind up in the hands of collectors. Their low print run compared to other sets of this era and their unique historical significance has made the set very popular with collectors to this day, and complete sets, let alone complete sets in uncut form, remain hard to find and extremely desirable. The only time we have ever offered a complete set in uncut form was as lot #1146 in REA's Fall 2013 auction, where it realized $9,480. The offered sheets are each in exceptional condition with minimal wear visible on the edges and at the corners, all due to their large size which made them difficult to store throughout the years (each sheet measures approximately 28.5 by 43 inches). The key card to the sheet, the rookie card of Chipper Jones, remains in Mint condition along the top row of one of the sheets. Outstanding opportunity to acquire this sought-after modern set in ideal uncut form. Total: 6 uncut sheets. SOLD FOR $6,000
