1974 Topps Baseball Back-of-Card Cartoon Artworks (90)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,160
Collection of ninety Topps cartoon artworks used in the production of the 1974 Topps baseball series. These are the actual cartoon artworks which appear on the backs of the standard 1974 Topps cards, adding a little humor and extra content to the reverses of the cards, as was standard practice for many Topps sets beginning in the 1950s. These artworks were purchased at the famous 1989 Topps/Guernsey's auction (lots #752 and 757) and have been consigned to this auction directly from the original purchaser! The ninety original black-and-white ink artworks are executed on six thin artist's boards, ranging in size from approximately 11.75 x 14.25 inches to 10.5 x 13 inches, with fifteen artworks per board (three rows of five). Approximately thirteen percent of the card-back artworks which appear in the 1974 Topps set are represented by this collection. The player's name and card number have been added by Topps in the margin area and interior area, respectively, of each artwork. This was done to make sure that the correct artwork was assigned to the correct player for card design. Numerous Hall of Famers are represented in this collection, including Johnny Bench, Steve Carlton, Carlton Fisk, Al Kaline, Harmon Killebrew, and Willie McCovey, as well as other stars, such as Steve Garvey and Pete Rose. All the artworks are in Near Mint condition. Two artworks on one of the artist's boards were replaced by Topps at one point in time and are held in place by masking tape on the reverse (with no affect on the artwork portion). These are fascinating original artworks that are ideal for display with their respective issued cards. Total: 6 artist's boards containing 90 artworks. SOLD FOR $2,160
