1964 Topps Venezuelan #150 Willie Mays

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $600

Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. Outstanding example of Hall of Famer Willie Mays from the 1964 Topps Venezuelan issue. The Topps Venezuelan issues are among the most fascinating sets of the 1960s. The first 370 cards of Topps’ 1964 baseball set were reprinted on a non-glossy cardboard stock for sale exclusively in the Venezuelan market. The fronts are identical in design to the regular-issue Topps’ cards, but the backs are black instead of the normal orange. While this card is far from Mint condition, it is far above average for this unusual issue. They are almost always found with light paper loss and scrapbook remnants on the reverse, since these cards were intended to be glued into an album produced for that purpose. This card is a rare exception to this rule: the back is entirely clean and intact. The card displays light, even wear to the corners, which is responsible for the VG-EX grade (as opposed to an even higher grade). Though they receive little attention because they are virtually never found in high grade, Topps Venezuelan cards are among the most unusual and rare baseball-card sets of the decade. This is a virtually unheard of high-grade Venezuelan example of one of the most popular players in the history of the game. We could not think of a better player to have as a sample card from the Venezuelan Topps' series than Hall of Famer Willie Mays. SOLD FOR $600
