1963 Topps Complete Set (576)

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $12,000

50% Nr/Mt or better, 28% Ex-Mt, and 22% Ex (including a few miscut or lesser). Extraordinary high-grade complete set of 1963 Topps baseball, consisting of 576 cards plus two variations (for a total of 578 cards), highlighted by particularly strong examples of several key cards, including a MINT 96 example of #242 Aaron/Banks, a NM/MT+ 92 example of #553 Willie Stargell RC, and a stunning NM/MT 88 example of the key #537 Pete Rose RC. In addition to these two key rookie cards, the 1963 Topps set also features many additional star cards, including Roberto Clemente and Duke Snider in the difficult high-number series. This set appears to have been carefully assembled in the year of issue and has remained untouched ever since. These cards look like they were just printed! From an old-time collection, this set has been stored away for decades and remains in pack-fresh condition. (Interesting note: this is the second 1963 Topps set we are offering from this same old-time collection; the first appeared as lot #803 in REA's Spring 2014 auction and realized $26,663.) Brilliant colors, crisp images, bright white borders, and sharp corners! Centering, which is commonly an issue with this set, is the only flaw on almost all of the lesser-graded cards. We have selected eight cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Keys: #1 NL Batting Ldrs (Ex), 2 AL Batting Ldrs (98/2 T/B, otherwise Ex-Mt), 3 NL HR Ldrs (Ex-Mt), 18 Buc Blasters (thin top border, otherwise Nr/Mt), 25 Kaline (no top border, otherwise Nr/Mt-Mt), 68 Friendly Foes (Nr/Mt), 115 Yastrzemski (Nr/Mt), 120 Maris (90/10 L/R and T/B, otherwise Nr/Mt), 138 Mays/Musial (Ex-Mt), 169 Perry RC (Nr/Mt), 173 Bombers' Best with Mantle (NM+ 86), 200 Mantle (NM+ 86), 205 Aparicio (Nr/Mt-Mt), 210 Koufax (NM/MT 88), 228 Oliva RC (Ex-Mt), 242 Banks/Aaron (MINT 96), 245 Hodges (Ex-Mt+), 250 Musial (no left border, otherwise Nr/Mt), 275 Mathews (5/95 L/R, otherwise Nr/Mt+), 300 Mays (NM/MT 88), 320 Spahn (Nr/Mt-Mt), 323 Mazeroski (Nr/Mt-Mt), 340 Berra (Nr/Mt), 345 B. Robinson (Ex-Mt), 360 Drysdale (90/10 L/R, otherwise Nr/Mt-Mt), 380 Banks (Nr/Mt-Mt), 390 Aaron (Ex, entirely out of focus back), 400 F. Robinson (Nr/Mt+), 412 Dodgers' Big Three with Koufax (Nr/Mt), 415 Gibson (10/90 L/R, otherwise Nr/Mt+), 440 Marichal (Ex-Mt), 446 Ford (Nr/Mt+), 472 Brock (Ex-Mt+), 490 McCovey (95/5 L/R, otherwise Nr/Mt), 500 Killebrew SP (Nr/Mt), 537 Rose RC (NM/MT 88), 540 Clemente (NM+ 86), 520 Cepeda (miscut right edge, otherwise Nr/Mt+), 525 Fox (Nr/Mt-Mt), 550 Snider (Nr/Mt), and 553 Stargell RC (NM/MT+ 92). The two variations included are #102 and 431. The flush-to-the-bottom-border design of the 1963 Topps baseball set makes this issue particularly susceptible to edge and corner wear, and makes the assembly of high-grade sets all the more difficult. It is extremely rare to find such a crisp, clean, sharp-looking complete set with the numerous highlights of the offered set. The equivalent SMR value for just the eight graded cards (not including the 570 ungraded cards!) is $5,075. Total: 578 cards (complete set of 576 cards plus two variations). SOLD FOR $12,000
