1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,900

1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle, graded "Authentic" by SGC. This 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle shares many characteristics with that of a pack-fresh gem, but it has undergone several alterations, which prohibit it from achieving a numerical grade. The card has been neatly trimmed on all four sides, creating razor-sharp corners, with the exception of the top right corner, which is chipped and rounded. It has also been carefully touched up in several places (not detectable to the naked eye, but under a black light, the restoration is immediately apparent and glows). While this card is not a candidate to be assigned a numerical grade by SGC or PSA, it represents an outstanding relatively affordable example of one of card collecting's most famous and desirable classics. The card is crisp and clean, both front and back, with perfect centering, perfect registration, flawless bold colors, and strong, sharp corners (except for the top right one noted above, which is chipped, rounded, and has a small area of paper loss affecting the border area). Perfect, bold printing on the reverse. In recent years we have seen an ever increasing appreciation for the exceptional value offered by cards such as this example. This is still a tremendous card, representing a potentially extraordinary value for the collector who wants a beautiful 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle at a far more affordable level than a graded example with a similar appearance.
