1884 Allen & Ginter Virginia Brights Female Baseball Player Cabinet - "Polka Dot Nine"

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,200

Presented is a beautiful nineteenth-century cabinet card featuring a woman ballplayer posing in uniform, issued as a premium by the Allen & Ginter tobacco company. The cabinet, which measures approximately 5 x 7.5 inches, features the advertisement for "Virginia Brights Cigarettes," a very early Allen & Ginter cigarette brand, and is dated "Crop of 1884" at top. The image of the outstretched female ballplayer is from the "Polka Dot Nine" series, which is identified by name on the mount along with advertising. Nine subjects, each representing one of the nine positions, comprise the series. The mount is designed with red trim along the beveled edges. Presenting as Excellent from the front, with outstanding photo contrast and only very minor corner wear, the cabinet would technically grade modestly due to areas of paper loss near the top edge of the blank reverse. These flaws "come with the territory" when evaluating nineteenth-century cards, which were so often mounted in albums. This is a fascinating and scarce cabinet photo featuring a woman playing the game of baseball during the nineteenth century. These cabinet cards are somewhat modest in value compared to cabinets of Major Leaguers from this era, but are actually considerably rarer than most other pre-1900 baseball-related cards.
