1952 Topps Complete Set Minus One (406/407) Plus #1-80 Back Variations and Page/Sain Errors
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $21,600
Presented is an outstanding 1952 Topps near-complete set of 406 cards (missing only Mantle for completion) PLUS all eighty low-number black-back variations and also including both the Page and Sain error cards for an extraordinary total of 488 different cards. The Mantle from this set (graded PSA GOOD+ 2.5) is presented individually as its own lot in this auction. This is a tremendous opportunity to acquire a near-complete master set of 1952 Topps, the premier postwar gum-card set, without spending the fortune that this set would cost in a higher grade, or the considerably higher amount that it would almost certainly cost to put this set together one card at a time. This is an extremely attractive, very carefully assembled, and overall remarkably clean and attractive complete set. While the condition of cards from this set technically spans several grades, even the lesser-graded cards are extremely pleasing and exhibit bright colors and crisp focus. This set has been consigned from a very old-time collection!
The low-numbers (#1-310 plus 80 back variations) grade as follows: 76% grade Vg to Vg-Ex and 24% grade Gd (including approximately 4% lesser). The rare high-numbers (#311-407) grade as follows: 40% Vg-Ex (including some Ex), 34% Vg, and 26% Gd (including a few lesser). We have selected three cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Low-Number Keys (#1-310): #1 Pafko (black and red back, both Pr/Fr), 2 Runnels (black back, Gd, and red back, Gd+), 11 Rizzuto (black and red back, both Gd), 20 Loes RC (black back, Gd+, and red back, Fr), 22 DiMaggio (black and red back, both Fr), 26 Irvin (black back, Gd+, and red back, Vg+), 29 Kluszewski (black back, Vg+, and red back, Gd/Vg), 33 Spahn (black back, Fr, and red back, Ex), 36 Hodges (black back, Vg, and red back, 100/0 L/R, otherwise Ex), 37 Snider (black back, Gd, and red back, Vg), 48b Page/error (black back, Vg-Ex+), 49 Sain/error (black back, Vg+), 57 Lopat (black back, Gd+, and red back, Vg+), 59 Roberts (black back, Vg-Ex+, and red back, Fr), 65 Slaughter (black back, Vg+, and red back, Vg-Ex), 66 Roe (black and red backs, both Vg), 67 Reynolds (black back, Vg-Ex, and red back, Gd), 88 Feller (Gd), 91 Schoendienst (Gd), 122 Jensen (Gd+), 129 Mize (miscut, otherwise Ex), 175 Martin RC (Pr), 191 Berra (Fr), 195 Minoso RC (Ex+), 215 Bauer (Gd/Vg), 216 Ashburn (Vg-Ex+), 227 Garagiola (Vg-Ex), 243 Doby (Gd/Vg), 246 Kell (miscut, otherwise Vg-Ex), 250 Erskine (Vg+), 261 Mays (VG 40), 268 Lemon (Vg-Ex+), 274 Branca (Vg-Ex), and 277 Wynn (Ex). High-Number Keys (#311-407): #312 Robinson (GOOD 30), 313 Thomson (Vg+), 314 Campanella (Gd+), 315 Durocher (Vg-Ex), 321 Black RC (Vg), 326 Shuba (Gd), 333 Reese (Vg), 342 Labine RC (Ex), 344 Blackwell (Vg-Ex), 347 Adcock (Vg-Ex), 357 Burgess (Gd+), 369 Groat RC (Vg), 372 McDougald RC (Vg), 377 Dressen (Vg), 382 Jones RC (Vg+), 384 Crosetti (Vg+), 392 Wilhelm RC (Fr), 394 Herman (Vg-Ex), 396 Williams RC (Vg), 400 Dickey (Vg), 406 Nuxhall RC (Gd), and 407 Mathews (GOOD+ 35).
As noted above, all eighty low-number (#1-80) black-back variations are also included with this set and have been calculated in the overall condition composite. (To be clear: TWO complete #1-80 runs are included: a complete #1-80 run of the normal "red-back" cards, plus a complete #1-80 run of the scarcer "black-back" variations.) The amazing thing about a quality mid-grade 1952 Topps set such as this is the outstanding value it offers compared to cards in higher grade, as well as the comfort provided by the natural potential "break value" associated with such a set. This is a rarely offered, exceptionally attractive mixed-grade near-complete master set of one of baseball-card collecting's premier issues. The equivalent SMR value for just the three graded cards (factoring in the Mathews at the lower whole-grade level and not including the 485 ungraded cards!) is $2,300. Total: 488 cards (406 basic cards plus 82 variations). SOLD FOR $21,600
