1960 to 1971 Fleer Complete Set Collection (5 Sets, 413 Cards) Plus 1959 Fleer Ted Williams Uncut Sheet

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,560

Outstanding collection of early Fleer cards, comprised of five complete sets plus one uncut sheet, highlighted by the 1960 and 1961-1962 Fleer Baseball Greats sets, each featuring old-timers. These were extremely substantial and significant sets issued by Fleer, as it battled as best it could to be a part of the baseball-card market in a world in which Topps had exclusive contracts with virtually all modern stars. Ted Williams was the one current star under contract with Fleer, and he appears in the 1960 set (on the heels of the marketing of the 1959 Fleer Ted Williams set) as an added draw for kids. This collection consists of the following: 1) 1959 Fleer Ted Williams Uncut Sheet: 15-card sheet featuring cards #12, 14, 16, 27, 29, 31, 44, 46, 48, 59, 61, 63, 76, 78, and 80. Very Good condition overall, with light wear at the corners and a few minor crease. Displays as Excellent. 2) 1960 Fleer Baseball Greats Set (79 cards): Overall condition is Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt (averaging Nr/Mt). Keys: #3 Ruth (Ex-Mt+), 28 Gehrig (Ex-Mt), 42 Cobb (Nr/Mt), and 72 T. Williams (Ex-Mt+). 3) 1961-1962 Baseball Greats Set (154 cards): 90% Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt and 10% Ex. Keys: #1 Baker/Cobb/Wheat (marked, otherwise Vg), 14 Cobb (Ex+), 31 Gehrig (Ex-Mt), 75 Ruth (Nr/Mt), 150 Wagner (Ex+), and 152 T. Williams (Ex-Mt). 4) 1961 Fleer World Champion Pennant Decals Complete Set (48): Condition ranges from Ex to Nr/Mt (averaging Ex-Mt). 5) 1970 Fleer World Series Complete Set (66): 80% Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt (averaging Nr/Mt) and 20% Ex (almost entirely due to centering). 6) 1971-1980 Fleer World Series Complete Set (66): Bright, crisp, and clean, but almost entirely miscut. Otherwise Ex to Nr/Mt (averaging Ex-Mt). The early Fleer sets are among the most interesting and overlooked sets of the era. Total: 413 cards representing five complete sets plus one uncut sheet.
