1948 to 1963 Baseball Partial and Complete Set Collection - Unusual Issues (13 sets, 596 cards)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $5,400

Eclectic collection of thirteen complete or near-complete sets, spanning the years 1948 through 1963, highlighted by many Hall of Famers and stars. This is a tremendous group of unusual vintage cards, primarily comprised of overlooked and undervalued "oddball" issues, with many interesting highlights and a tremendous "break value." Consigned by the family of an old-time collector, many of these sets were assembled decades ago (many collected, no doubt, in the year of issue) and were carefully stored until now. This same old-time collector's Topps sets appear elsewhere in this auction, while this lot represents the various unusual issues of the collection, and is comprised of the following:

1) 1948 Swell Sport Thrills Complete Set (20).
Condition ranges from Vg to Ex (with eight lesser). This very scarce and unusual 20-card set was issued by the Swell Gum Company of Philadelphia. Each of the card fronts features a black-and-white photo of a great event in baseball history, accompanied by a story on the reverse. Represented are a mixture of old timers (such as Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig) and then-current stars (such as Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams). Keys: #3 Jackie Robinson (Vg), 4 Walter Johnson (Ex), 12 Gehrig/Ruth (Pr), 14 Gehrig (Gd/Vg), 16 DiMaggio/Ted Williams (Pr), 18 Pee Wee Reese (Vg-Ex), and 19 Feller (Vg). 2) 1950 Callahan Hall of Fame Near-Complete Set (64/82). Missing eighteen cards to be complete: Baker, Barrow, Bender, Connolly, Dean, Dickey, DiMaggio, Hartnett, Klem, Lyons, Maranville, Schalk, Simmons, Terry, Vance, Wallace, H. Wright, and Museum Interior. Grades Ex to Ex-Mt, with six Fr to Gd. 3) 1954 Red Man Complete Set without Tabs (52/54). Missing only #4A Kell/Boston and 24N Burdette for a complete master set. Overall condition is 48% ranging from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex) and 52% grading Gd to Vg (including 16% with pencil on reverse, which otherwise present as Ex). Keys: #1N Ashburn (Vg-Ex), 3A Fox (Ex), 4B Kell/Chicago (pencil on reverse, otherwise Ex), 5N Irvin (Ex-Mt), 6N Kluszewski (Vg), 10N Schoendienst (Gd), 11N Spahn (Vg), 13N Campanella (Ex), 15N Reese (Ex+), 16A Ford (Ex), 16N Snider (Ex+), 17A Rizzuto (Ex), 18N Roberts (Gd), 19N Slaughter (with tab, Vg+), 20A Berra (date written in pencil on reverse, otherwise Ex-Mt), 21A Lemon (Ex-Mt), 22N Hodges (Ex-Mt), 23N Mathews (Vg), and 25N Mays (Vg). One common, Avila, has a tab intact. 4) 1955 Red Man Complete Set without Tabs (50). Overall condition is 54% Ex to Ex-Mt and 46% Vg to Vg-Ex (including 16% with pencil on reverse, which otherwise present as Ex). Grades 85% Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt, with 15% Ex (without reference to the scattered natural toning on the reverses). The Nu-Card Baseball Hi-Lites set features many of baseball's greatest moments presented in a mock newspaper design. 8) 1961 Golden Press Complete Set (33). Grades Nr/Mt. 9) 1961 Morrell Meats Dodgers Complete Set (6). Grades Ex to Ex-Mt. 10) 1961 Nu-Card Baseball Scoops Complete Set (80). Overall Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt, with a few Ex due to centering.
