1951 Bowman #253 Mickey Mantle Rookie Card

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,700

Graded EX 5 [MC] by PSA. Very attractive example of Mickey Mantle's true rookie card. One of card collecting's greatest classics, Mantle's Bowman rookie card is the key to the 1951 Bowman set, and one of the most popular of all postwar baseball cards. This striking example is in a particularly interesting grade. It has been assigned a "MC" qualifier for a side-to-side miscut, which has resulted in no border on the right side (when held horizontally as intended) and a very tiny sliver of the next card visible on the left side. Aside from the centering issue (which cannot be ignored, but is not particularly distracting), it shares all the qualities one would expect in an EX card: a crisp image, flawless registration, bold colors, and light touches of wear to the four corners. Free of any print lines, which are extremely common to this card. The reverse is clean and boldly printed. This is a strong mid-grade example of this classic and significant Mickey Mantle card.
