1948 Bowman Complete Set Minus One (47/48)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,680
The 1948 Bowman set is an extremely significant landmark issue of the postwar years, literally launching a new era of bubble-gum card collecting. Key rookie cards of many stars and Hall of Famers highlight Bowman's first baseball-card issue. This is an exceptionally attractive complete set minus one (missing only #36 Musial RC for completion). Condition: 32% grade Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt, 48% Vg to Vg-Ex (including some Ex), and the remaining 20% present as Ex overall but appear to be slightly trimmed (some possibly sheet-cut). Seventeen cards are graded and encapsulated (sixteen PSA, all submitted by REA, and one SGC). Keys: #1 Elliot RC (Vg+), 2 Blackwell (Vg-Ex), 3 Kiner RC (EX 5), 4 Mize (NM-MT 8 [OC]), 5 Feller (Vg-Ex), 6 Berra RC (EX-MT 6), 7 Reiser SP (possible slight trim, otherwise Vg-Ex+), 8 Rizzuto RC (VG-EX 4), 12 Sain RC (EX-MT 6), 14 Reynolds RC (Vg+), 17 Slaughter (possible slight trim, otherwise Ex), 18 Spahn RC (SGC NM 84), 19 Henrich (Fr), 29 Page RC (Vg), 35 Stirnweiss RC (EX-MT 6), 38 Schoendienst (Vg), 40 Marion RC (possible slight trim, otherwise Vg), 47 Thomson RC (Vg+). The following cards are graded NM 7 by PSA (unless noted): #11, 15, 16 (NM-MT 8), 31, 32, 33, 34, 41 (EX-MT 6), 46 (OC), and 48. Beautiful mixed-grade set of this significant postwar issue with many condition highlights. The total SMR value for just fourteen of the seventeen graded cards (not including the one card graded VG-EX 4, the two qualified cards, and not including the thirty additional ungraded cards!) is $1,650. Total: 47 cards.
