1948 Bowman Complete Set (48)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $600

Offered is a complete set of forty-eight cards from the 1948 Bowman series, the first baseball-card set issued by Bowman Gum, highlighted by key rookie cards of many stars and Hall of Famers. The cards in this complete set are relatively modest in grade, ranging from Pr to Vg (averaging Gd), with five sheet-cut cards. Keys: #1 Elliot RC (Gd), 2 Blackwell (Gd), 3 Kiner RC (sheet-cut, otherwise Pr), 4 Mize (Vg+), 5 Feller (Vg), 6 Berra RC (Fr), 7 Reiser SP (Fr), 8 Rizzuto RC (sheet-cut, otherwise Pr), 12 Sain RC (Fr), 14 Reynolds RC (Fr), 17 Slaughter (Vg-Ex), 18 Spahn RC (Gd), 19 Henrich (Gd), 21 Fain RC (Fr), 22 Bevins SP (Gd), 29 Page RC (Gd/Vg), 35 Stirnweiss RC (Pr/Fr), 36 Musial RC (Pr), 38 Schoendienst (sheet-cut, otherwise Vg), 40 Marion RC (sheet-cut, otherwise Fr), 45 Sauer (Gd+), and 47 Thomson RC (Vg+). Attractive low-grade sets from the late 1940s and early 1950s are not easily found and are understandably extremely popular with collectors. It's easy to see why: they share the enormous historical significance of higher-grade sets but don't cost a fortune. This is an outstanding relatively affordable complete set of Bowman's first baseball-card set, universally recognized as one of the most important gum-card issues of the postwar era. Total: 48 cards.
