1949 Bowman Complete Set (240) with 86 PSA- and SGC-Graded Cards

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $8,400

1949 Bowman complete set of 240 cards. 31% Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt, 43% Ex, 21% Vg-Ex (including a few Vg), and 5% trimmed or hand-cut. This is an extremely attractive mid- to high-grade set, rarely offered this nice as a complete set. While the condition of cards from this set spans several grades, included are many high-grade cards and even the lesser-graded cards are very pleasing and exhibit bright colors and crisp focus. In most cases, a little honest wear to the corners (a common problem for this issue due to the paper stock on which it is printed) is the only flaw on otherwise bright and extremely crisp uncirculated cards. Many rookie cards of Hall of Famers are featured in this classic postwar issue, highlighted by Roy Campanella, Richie Ashburn, Duke Snider, Robin Roberts, Early Wynn, and Bob Lemon. Of the 240 cards in the set, eighty-six (36%) have been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA (except for ten SGC and one BVG), including almost all of the key cards (Robinson, Paige, Campanella, etc.).

The PSA grades are as follows: NM+ 7.5 (1 card): #56 (SGC NM+ 86). NM 7 (25 cards): #3, 6, 8 (SGC NM 84), 9, 10, 11 Boudreau (HOF), 13, 16, 21, 31, 32, 34, 37, 40, 41, 42, 44, 98 Rizzuto NNOF (HOF, SGC NM 84), 113 (SGC NM 84), 132 (SGC NM 84), 143, 186, 191, 209, and 220. EX-MT+ 6.5 (1 card): #4. EX-MT 6 (29 cards): #12, 25, 30, 36 Reese (HOF), 39, 47, 50 Robinson (HOF, SGC EX/NM 80), 61, 74, 81, 82 (BVG EX-MT 6), 93, 95, 103, 105 106, 107, 109, 116, 131, 135, 156, 157, 159, 168, 192, 212, 214 Ashburn (HOF), and 229. EX+ 5.5 (10 cards): #14 Simmons RC (SGC EX+ 70), 28, 35 (SGC EX+ 70), 51, 70 Furillo RC, 84 Campanella RC (HOF), 91, 137, 195 (SGC EX+ 70), and 240 Young (SGC EX+ 70). EX 5 (19 cards): #1 Bickford, 17, 45, 55, 60 Berra (HOF), 85 Mize NNOF (HOF), 87, 104, 110 Wynn RC (HOF, SGC EX 60), 117, 122, 123, 125, 126, 128, 129, 133, 136, and 193. VG-EX 4 (1 card): #224 Paige (HOF). Ungraded keys: #23 Doerr (Ex), 24 Musial (adhesive residue on reverse, Nr/Mt front), 27 Feller (faint adhesive residue on reverse, otherwise Ex-Mt+), 29 Kiner (Ex), 33 Spahn (98/2 L/R, otherwise Ex), 46 Roberts RC (paper loss on reverse, otherwise Ex-Mt), 65 Slaughter (Ex-Mt), 100 Hodges RC (surface wear on reverse, otherwise Ex-Mt), 111 Schoendienst (Ex),162 Roe (Ex), 175 Appling (2/98 L/R, otherwise Nr/Mt), 210 Gordon (Ex-Mt), 226 Snider RC (Vg-Ex+), 233 Doby (Ex+), and 238 Lemon RC (Ex).

1949 Bowman is the most underrated set in terms of rarity among Topps and Bowman sets issued between 1948 and 1955. We rarely see 1949 Bowman sets, let alone in such outstanding clean and consistent condition as offered here. With just a few upgrades this set could provide the foundation for a world-class 1949 Bowman set. The total SMR value for just the eighty-five graded cards (factoring in the twelve half-grades at the lower whole-grade level and not including the VG-EX 4 Paige, and also not including the additional 154 ungraded cards!) is $4,480. This is an extremely carefully assembled and beautiful set! Total: 240 cards. SOLD FOR $8,400
