1949 Bowman Near-Complete Set (214/240)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,600

Exceptionally sharp-looking near-complete set of 1949 Bowman, one of the most popular and classic of all postwar baseball-card sets, consisting of 214 different cards (out of 240 in the set). Many rookie cards of Hall of Famers are featured in this classic postwar issue, highlighted by Richie Ashburn, Duke Snider, Robin Roberts, Early Wynn, and Bob Lemon. The cards in this set present with bright colors and crisp focus. As can be seen by the following condition composite, this near-set is far better than normally seen for this condition-sensitive issue, and would provide an outstanding foundation for the assembly of a high-grade set. Condition: 15% Nr/Mt, 34% Ex-Mt, and 51% Ex (including 7% lesser, mostly Vg-Ex). We have selected eight cards to be graded and encapsulated by PSA. Keys: #1 Bickford (Ex), 11 Boudreau (Ex), 23 Doerr (Ex+), 24 Musial (EX 5), 26 Kell (Vg-Ex+), 27 Feller (EX-MT 6), 29 Kiner (Vg-Ex+), 33 Spahn (VG-EX+ 4.5), 36 Reese (Gd/Vg), 46 Roberts RC (Vg+), 60 Berra (EX 5), 64 Dimaggio (Ex), 65 Slaughter (Ex+), 70 Furillo RC (Ex), 84 Campanella RC (EX 5), 85 Mize NNOF (Ex-Mt), 98 Rizzuto NOF (Gd/Vg), 100 Hodges RC (EX 5), 110 Wynn RC (Ex+), 111 Schoendienst (Ex), 175 Appling (Vg-Ex+), 210 Gordon (Ex+), 214 Ashburn RC (Vg-Ex), 226 Snider RC ("Authentic," due to evidence of trimming, otherwise Ex), 233 Doby (EX-MT+ 6.5), and 238 Lemon RC (Ex+). Missing the following cards for completion: #50, 155, 159-163, 165, 166, 168, 170, 171, 177-180, 188, 190, 194, 200, 201, 209, 211, 220, 224, and 235. 1949 Bowman is the most underrated set in terms of rarity among Topps and Bowman sets issued between 1948 and 1955. We rarely see 1949 Bowman sets, let alone ones in such clean and consistent condition. This is a beautiful collection as is, and, as noted, with a few upgrades and filling in the twenty-six missing cards, this collection could easily provide the foundation for a extremely strong 1949 Bowman set. The total SMR value for just six of the graded cards (not including the two cards graded less than EX and not including the additional 206 ungraded cards!) is $1,050. Total: 214 cards. SOLD FOR $3,600
