1948-1949 Leaf Near-Complete Set (72/98) Including 14 Hall of Famers and 23 "Rare Leafs"

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $6,600

Presented is a near-complete set comprised of seventy-two different cards (out of 98) from the 1948-1949 Leaf Gum set, highlighted by fourteen Hall of Famers and twenty-three of the "Rare Leaf" short prints. Forty-nine cards in the set are considered "standard," and the additional "short print" series of forty-nine cards in the set are so rare that "Rare Leafs" has long been a formal card-collecting hobby term. Leafs are without question one of the most difficult postwar sets to complete because of all the rare cards. Condition: 35% Vg-Ex, 33% Vg, 19% Fr-Gd, and 13% trimmed or miscut. The rare short prints, which are included in the preceding condition composite, specifically grade as follows: four Vg-Ex, six Vg, seven Fr-Gd, and six slightly trimmed or miscut. We have selected three cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: #1 DiMaggio (VG/EX+ 55), 3 Ruth (Fr), 4 Musial (Vg+), 11 Rizzuto (Vg), 32 Spahn (trimmed, otherwise Ex), 38 Kluszewski (Vg-Ex), 46 Mize (trimmed, otherwise Ex), 59 Appling (Gd), 70 Wagner (Vg+), 76 Williams (VG/EX 50), 79 Robinson (EX 60), 83 Doerr (Vg), 91 Kiner (Vg-Ex), 106 Boudreau (Vg-Ex), and 117 Gordon (Vg-Ex+). Short Prints: #13, 30, 36, 43, 48, 54, 62, 66, 75, 78, 85, 104, 113, 121, 123, 133, 137, 142, 143, 144, 158, 160, and 165. Common Cards: #10, 14, 17, 22, 26, 27, 28, 29, 31, 39, 42, 47, 49, 50, 53, 56, 57, 61, 65, 72, 73, 77, 82, 84, 86, 95, 97, 102, 111, 125, 128, 136, 139, and 159. This is a very attractive mixed-grade near-complete 1948-1949 Leaf set with many significant highlights from this classic gum-card issue. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grade for just the Jackie Robinson card (not including the other two graded cards and the 69 ungraded cards!) is $1,150. Total: 72 cards.

The items in this lot are part of the deaccessioned property of a prominent northeast museum which has selected Robert Edward Auctions to handle the sale of donated sportscards and memorabilia in an effort to fund purchases more in line with the mission and goals of the museum.
