1948-1949 Leaf Near-Complete Set (77/98) Plus Three Variations

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $8,400

Presented is a near-complete set comprised of seventy-seven different cards (out of 98) from the 1948-1949 Leaf Gum set, highlighted by eighteen Hall of Famers and twenty-eight of the "Rare Leaf" short prints. Forty-nine cards in the set are considered "standard," and the additional "short print" series of forty-nine cards in the set are so rare that "Rare Leafs" has long been a formal card-collecting hobby term. Also included are the three variations needed to complete a master set (Aberson, Hermanski, and Peterson). Leafs are without question one of the most difficult postwar sets to complete because of all the rare cards. Condition: 9% Ex or better, 15% Vg-Ex, 39% Vg, 23% Gd, and 14% Pr. The rare short prints, which are included in the preceding condition composite, specifically grade as follows: six Ex or better, four Vg-Ex, six Vg, nine Gd, and three Pr. Seventeen cards are professionally graded (nine PSA and eight SGC). Keys: #1 DiMaggio (SGC POOR 10, presents as VG, downgraded due to adhesive on reverse), 3 Ruth (SGC VG+ 45), 4 Musial (Fr), 11 Rizzuto (Vg-Ex, prominent ghost image on reverse), 32 Spahn (miscut L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex+), 38 Kluszewski (Vg), 42a Peterson/red cap (PSA NM 7), 46 Mize (Pr), 59 Appling (Vg+), 70 Wagner (Vg-Ex), 76 Williams (SGC VG+ 45), 79 Robinson (PSA VG+ 3.5), 83 Doerr (Vg), 91 Kiner (Pr), 98 Newhouser RC SP (SGC VG+ 45), 102a Hermanski/incorrect (PSA VG-EX 4), 106 Boudreau (Fr), 117 Gordon (Vg), 127 Slaughter SP (Fr), and 138 Doby RC SP (SGC EX+ 70). Short Prints: #5, 13, 19, 30, 33, 36, 43, 45 (SGC VG 40), 51 (PSA VG-EX 4), 54, 62 (SGC VG/EX 50), 63 (PSA EX-MT+ 6.5), 66 (SGC VG 40), 68, 75 (PSA EX 5), 88 (PSA EX+ 5.5), 104, 108, 123 (PSA EX-MT 6), 131, 133, 143, 144, 149, 165, and 168. Common Cards: #10, 14, 17, 22, 26, 27, 28, 29 (PSA EX-MT 6), 31, 39, 42b, 47, 49, 50, 53, 56, 57, 61, 65, 72, 73, 77, 82, 84, 86, 95, 97, 102b, 111, 125, 128, 136a, 136b, 139, and 159. This is a very attractive mixed-grade near-complete 1948-1949 Leaf set with many significant highlights from this classic gum-card issue. The SMR value in the assigned grade for just seven of the graded cards (assigning no premium to the Peterson/red cap variation, and not including the ten cards graded less than EX or the additional 63 ungraded cards!) is $2,240. Total: 80 cards. SOLD FOR $8,400
