1941 R330 Double Play Complete Set (75)

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,800

Complete set of 1941 R330 Double Play consisting of 75 cards from this unique prewar card issue, which features two players per card and is highlighted by cards featuring Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams (each appearing on two cards), as well as many other Hall of Famers and stars of the era. Issued by Gum Products, Inc., of Cambridge, MA, this set has never received the collector interest that it deserves. R330s are much scarcer than other issues produced during the same time period, like Play Balls. Remarkably, this is the first complete set of R330s we have ever auctioned (we have sold several partial sets). Condition is 18% Ex (including a few better), 67% Vg to Vg-Ex, and 15% lesser. We have selected three cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: #11-12 Ripple/Lombardi (Vg), 15-16 Owen/P. Waner (Vg+), 21-22 Walker/Medwick (Vg-Ex+), 23-24 Reese/Higbe (VG/EX+ 55), 31-32 Ott/Young (Vg+), 33-34 Handley/Vaughan (Vg-Ex+), 39-40 Mize/Slaughter (Ex-Mt), 51-52 Newsome/Greenberg (Vg-Ex+), 53-54 McCosky/Gehringer (Ex), 57-58 Williams/Tabor (EX/NM 80), 59-60 Cronin/Foxx (Gd), 61-62 Gomez/Rizzuto (Fr), 63-64 DiMaggio/Keller (Pr), 65-66 Rolfe/Dickey (Pr), 67-68 Gordon/Ruffing (Fr), 69-70 Tresh/Appling (Vg-Ex), 77-78 Krakauskas/Feller (VG+ 45), 81-82 Williams/Cronin (Fr), 83-84 Gordon/Keller (Vg-Ex), 85-86 Greenberg/Ruffing (Vg+), 89-90 Ott/Whitehead (Vg-Ex), 99-100 Mize/Litwhiler (Vg, diamond cut), 105-106 Grove/Doerr (Vg-Ex), 119-120 L. Waner/Majeski (Vg-Ex), 131-132 Campbell/Boudreau (Ex+), 139-140 Arnovich/Hubbell (Vg-Ex), and 141-142 Riggs/Durocher (Vg+). This is a very attractive medium-grade complete set of this overlooked prewar issue containing several notable highlights. The equivalent SMR value of just the three graded cards (factoring in the two half-grades at the lower whole-grade level) is $577. Total: 75 cards (representing 150 players). SOLD FOR $1,800
