1941 R336 Play Ball Collection (120) Including Complete Low-Number Set (#1-48)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,000
Collection of 120 assorted cards from the classic 1941 Play Ball gum-card set, highlighted by a complete low-number set (#1-48) and eight duplicate Hall of Famers. This lot includes two Ted Williams and two Jimmie Foxx. These cards have been in the possession of our consignor since the 1970s when they were purchased during one of the door-to-door antique-buying trips he went on with his father as a youngster. (Though baseball cards were not the primary focus of these trips, they recognized the cards were old and interesting and likely of some value. Fortunately, they put them aside and have kept them ever since!) Condition: 82% Vg to Vg-Ex (including a few Ex) and 18% Pr to Gd (including a few with irregular cuts). We have selected four cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: #6 Hubbell (Vg), two 8 Ott (both Vg-Ex), 10 Vaughan (Vg+ and Vg, measures small side-to-side), two 13 Foxx (VG/EX+ 55 and VG 40), two 14 Ted Williams (EX 60 and VG/EX 50), two 15 Cronin (Ex+ and Vg), two 18 Greenberg (both Pr), two 19 Gehringer (Vg-Ex and Vg+), and two 20 Ruffing (Vg-Ex and Vg+). Extremely attractive collection of cards, including several notable highlights, which would serve as an ideal foundation for the assembly of a complete 72-card 1941 Play Ball set (with plenty of duplicates for trade). The equivalent SMR value for just the four graded cards (factoring in the one half-grade at the lower whole-grade level, and not including the additional 116 cards!) is $1,385. Total: 120 cards. SOLD FOR $3,000
