1939 Play Ball Collection (72) Including Two Joe DiMaggio

Original-owner collection of seventy-two 1939 Play Ball gum cards, highlighted by nine cards featuring Hall of Famers, including two examples of key card Joe DiMaggio. Both DiMaggios are graded and encapsulated GOOD 30 by SGC (submitted by REA). The first of three major baseball-card sets by Gum, Inc., this landmark set is known for its inclusion of Ted Williams’ rookie card as well as cards of all of the other major stars and Hall of Famers of the era. Thirty of the cards in this collection are from the rare high-number series (#116-162). Overall condition of this group is Gd to Vg, with about a dozen lesser. This collection consists of the following: #4, 6 Durocher (HOF, Gd), 13, 15, 24, two 26 DiMaggio (HOF, both SGC GOOD 30), 27, 29, 31, 38, 39 Ferrell (HOF, Gd), 46, 47, 50 Gehringer (HOF, Vg+), 51 Ott (HOF, Fr), 53 Hubbell (HOF, Gd), 55 Vaughan (HOF, Pr/Fr), 57, 64, 65, 71, three 72, 73, 74, 75, 78, two 83, 89 L. Waner (HOF, Gd), 90, 97, two 99, 101, 102, 105, 108, 111, 115, two 116, 117, 119, 120, 121, two 122, 124, 127, two 130, 132, 133, 134, 136, 138, 139, 141, 144, 145, 150, two 151, 153, 156, 157, 158, 160, and 162. Although these cards are in relatively modest grades, they remain a small but desirable collection of cards from this classic prewar gum issue, highlighted by TWO attractive examples of Joe DiMaggio.
