1934-1936 R318 Batter-Up Collection (52) Including 23 Hall of Famers!

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,680

Collection of forty-eight different 1934-1936 R318 Batter-Up cards (plus four color variations for a total of fifty-two cards), including twenty-three Hall of Famers, highlighted by Carl Hubbell, Jimmie Foxx, Mel Ott, and Frankie Frisch. The R318 Batter-Up set is universally recognized as one of the most significant of all prewar baseball card issues. Their striking colors, unusual standup design, and rarity compared to other 1930s sets make Batter-Ups one of the most fascinating, distinctive, and difficult-to-complete of all sets from the 1930s. Cards from this set are very difficult to find in high-grade. These cards are designed with die-cut backgrounds that can be punched out and folded back to allow each card to stand up. Because of this design, many R318s are naturally found in damaged condition, and in many cases are found with the die-cut backgrounds entirely lost. All of the card backgrounds in this collection are complete, and the die-cut backgrounds are almost all intact. We have selected three cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: #3 Lopez (Gd), two 5 Hubbell (Vg and Fr), two 10 Ferrell (Vg-Ex and Pr), 14 Traynor (Pr), 17 L. Waner (Vg), 21 Vaughan (Vg-Ex), 23 Gomez (Vg), 24 Averill (Pr), 25 Cochrane (Pr), 27 Ott (Gd/Vg), 28 Foxx (Fr), 30 Dickey (VG/EX+ 55), 31 Grove (Gd), two 33 Frisch (EX 60 and Gd), 34 Simmons (Vg-Ex), 35 Hornsby (Gd), 36 Lyons (Vg+), 37 Maranville (Vg-Ex), 57 Greenberg (Vg+), and 73 Wilson (EX/NM 80). The balance of the cards grade relatively modestly with ten ranging from Vg to Ex and nineteen grading lesser (a few of which present as Vg or better but have album residue on the blank reverses). The balance consists of the following: #1, 11, 12, 15, 18, 19, 20, 22, 26, 29, two 39, 43, 46, 48, 53, 59, 60, 61, 63, 66, 68, 69, 72, 74, 79, 80, 174 (high #), and 191 (high #). Representing one-quarter of a complete set, this collection contains an outstanding selection of Hall of Famers and could serve as an excellent start toward assembling the full 192-card set. Total: 52 cards. SOLD FOR $1,680
