1933 R319 Goudey Complete Set Minus Two (238/240)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $10,800
The 1933 Goudey set is universally recognized as the single most popular and collected of all 1930s gum issues, and one of the most significant of all prewar baseball-card issues. Presented is a very attractive near-complete set of this classic issue, missing only #106 Lajoie and 181 Ruth for completion (the Ruth from this set graded SGC EX 60 and is being offered individually in this auction due its high grade). It is particularly rare to find a set of 1933 Goudeys that is attractive across-the-board and at the same time not prohibitively expensive. Condition composite: 18% Vg-Ex, 44% Vg, 27% Gd, and 11% lesser (including a few trimmed). Highlighted by three Babe Ruths and two Lou Gehrigs, this near-complete set boasts all the stars of the 1930s including an incredible sixty Hall of Famers (graded individually below). This is a very pleasing mixed-grade set. Seven cards are professionally graded (six SGC and one PSA--the Ruths and Gehrigs were submitted by REA). Keys: #1 Bengough (VG 40), 2 Vance (Gd), 7 Lyons (Vg), 19 Dickey (Gd/Vg), 20 Terry (Vg-Ex), 22 Traynor (Gd/Vg), 23 Cuyler (Vg), 25 Waner (Gd), 29 Foxx (Gd/Vg), 31 Lazzeri (Vg), 35 Simmons (Gd), 42 Collins (Vg), 44 Bottomley (Gd), 47 Manush (Vg-Ex), 49 Frisch (Vg), 53 Ruth (FAIR 20), 56 Ruffing (Vg+), 60 Hoyt (Fr), 63 Cronin (Vg+), 64 Grimes (Gd), 73 Haines (Vg), 74 Rixey (Gd), 76 Cochrane (Vg), 79 Faber (Vg-Ex), 89 Speaker (Vg), 92 Gehrig (VG 40), 102 Jackson (Vg), 103 Combs (Vg), 107 Manush (Fr), 109 Cronin (Vg+), 110 Goslin (Fr), 117 Maranville (Vg-Ex+), 119 Hornsby (Gd), 125 Terry (Vg-Ex+), 127 Ott (Ex), 128 Klein (Gd), 133 Lindstrom (Vg+), 134 Rice (Vg+), 138 Pennock (Vg), 144 Ruth (GOOD 30), 147 Durocher (Pr), 149 Ruth (GOOD 30), 154 Foxx (Fr), 158 Berg (Vg-Ex), 160 Gehrig ("Authentic," slight trim, otherwise Gd), 164 L. Waner (Vg-Ex), 165 Sewell (Fr), 168 Goslin (Vg+), 187 Manush (Gd), 188 Hornsby (Vg), 189 Cronin (Vg), 194 Averill (Vg), 197 Ferrell (Vg), 202 Hartnett (Gd), 207 Ott (Vg-Ex), 211 Wilson (Fr), 216 Gomez (Fr), 220 Grove (Vg), 222 Gehringer (Vg-Ex), 223 Dean (Vg-Ex), 229 Vaughan (Vg), 230 Hubbell (Vg-Ex), 234 Hubbell (Fr/Gd), and 240 Schumacher (Vg-Ex). This is an outstanding mid-grade set (potentially representing an outstanding collecting value!) from an old-time collection. The equivalent SMR value for just six of the seven graded cards (factoring in the #53 Ruth at the lower whole-grade level and not including the "Authentic" Gehrig or the 231 ungraded cards!) is $4,565. Total: 238 cards. SOLD FOR $10,800
