1934 R320 Goudey #1 Jimmy Foxx Copyright Card

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,320

Presented is an exceptional Goudey copyright submission card of #1 Jimmy Foxx from the 1934 R320 Goudey set. This is the very card submitted by the Goudey Gum Company for recording and copyrighting purposes to the United States Copyright Office in Washington, D.C. Two examples of each card were required to be submitted to the U.S. Copyright Office by Goudey. One example of each card was returned to Goudey, the other kept by the government for its files (since destroyed). Goudey's original copyright file cards were discovered in The Great Goudey Find of 1969, when Goudey's files were discovered and sold by collector John Fawcett. The copyright cards, which collectors often for convenience refer to as "patent cards," were included in the find and at that time were dispersed to the four corners of the collecting world. Occasionally examples surface, but all can be traced back to files of Goudey and their sale in 1969. Each card has copyright-related ink stampings on reverse. The date stamped on the reverse of the Foxx records that this card was received in the United States Copyright Office on June 7, 1934. As is often the case with Goudey copyright cards, the Foxx has some condition problems, related to its use as well as to the fact that all Goudey copyright cards were handcut from sheets by Goudey (evidenced by the irregular, uneven cuts on all four borders). Despite these flaws, this is an outstanding original copyright card featuring Hall of Famer Jimmy Foxx. Encapsulated as "Authentic" by PSA. SOLD FOR $1,320
