1933 Goudey, 1933 Sport Kings, and 1941 Play Ball Uncut Reproduction Sheets (2,800+ Sheets)
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $6,000
Presented is a tremendous offering of approximately 2,800 uncut reproduction sheets from three of the most classic card sets ever produced: 1933 R319 Goudey, 1933 R338 Sport Kings, and 1941 R336 Play Ball. These sheets were commissioned at great expense (approximately $18,000) by our consignor in 1991 and produced using original uncut sheets as models. Each sheet was limited to either 1,933 or 1,941 pieces (corresponding to the year of issue). For a short time after they were produced, they were offered by Champion Sports in its catalog sales at a retail price of $59.95 per sheet. It was always intended that these sheets would be marketed in art galleries and other retail outlets, but the project was more a labor of love than a fully formulated business plan, and the distribution of the product was never properly pursued. The two partners in the venture simply split up the inventory, and our consignor's half has been carefully packed in perfect condition in storage all these years until now! The inventory offered here represents the entire stock of our consignor, and presents an incredible and unique opportunity to acquire an extraordinary quantity of remarkable art-quality reproduction sheets that obviously have enormous potential value, whether from retail sale (as originally intended) or other types of promotional/marketing plans. Of special note, when these were presented to REA for auction, we could easily recognize their extraordinary quality and great potential value (which is not surprising, as the cost of manufacture in 1991 was $6 per sheet). But our concern was whether proper permission had ever been obtained from the estates of Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb for this product. We soon learned that no permission had ever been sought or granted, so REA contacted the licensing representatives of the families of Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb (and other stars) and explained our concern. Both the Luminary Group LLC (representatives of the family of Babe Ruth) and CMG Worldwide (representatives of the Ty Cobb family as well as many other stars) were sufficiently impressed with the product that they were kind enough to work with us to properly license this offering. We appreciate their support!
This collection consists of quantities of the following three sheets: 1) 1933 R319 Goudey Advertising Poster Reproduction Sheet (946): Each 24-card advertising poster sheet measures approximately 15 x 12-3/8 inches and is arranged in four rows of six cards. A Goudey advertising band is designed across the bottom row of the sheet, heralding "New Pictures with Big League Chewing Gum Including Babe Ruth." Each sheet is blank-backed (as are the original 1933 Goudey advertising posters) and are limitation numbered out of 1,933 in the bottom margin (the actual number is left blank for individual hand-numbering). 2) 1933 R338 Sport Kings Reproduction Sheet (946): Each 24-card sheet measures approximately 15 x 13.25 inches and is arranged in four rows of six cards.
