Pair of 1887 N175 Gypsy Queen Brown's Champions

Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $540

Presented are two extremely rare Gypsy Queen Brown's Champions portrait cards of Nat Hudson and Yank Robinson. These cards are the same size and general format as N172 Old Judge, but with a slightly different design, including a curved dome framing the portrait above, and featuring advertising for Goodwin's "Gypsy Queen" brand of tobacco. All N175 Gypsy Queens are rare and distinctive, but a Brown's Champions portrait example is particularly so. There has always been some confusion as to the catalog number of the smaller N175 Gypsy Queens (not to be confused with the even rarer large N175 Gypsy Queens, of which nine different cards are known) because the American Card Catalog does not distinguish between the two sizes of cards represented by "N175." Each card is encapsulated "Authentic" by SGC due to a skinned reverse. The Hudson otherwise grades Fr/Gd, with a strong image and outstanding contrast, but there is a tiny piece of the top right corner chipped off and light surface wrinkling. The Robinson otherwise grades Vg+, with a lighter image and even wear to the corners. These are two interesting and very distinctive sample cards from the rare and unusual Old Judge-related small-size N175 "Gypsy Queen" set. Total: 2 cards. SOLD FOR $540
