1921 Koester Bread Jesse Burkett

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,200

Graded VG 40 by SGC. Extremely significant card of Hall of Famer Jesse Burkett from the 1921 Koester Bread set. The 1921 World Series between the Yankees and Giants was the first New York "subway series." The Koester Bread set was issued to commemorate the series, and features the players, managers, and coaches of each team. They were distributed in October 1921 by E. H. Koester, a New York bakery. Cards from this unique regional issue are virtually identical to blank-backed versions of the E121 American Caramel series cards, but are printed on higher-quality, thicker stock. Several cards in the set are of special significance, none more so than Burkett. Burkett is one of just several players in this issue who do not appear in the E121 American Caramel set. In addition, this is one of just a handful of prewar cards which feature Burkett, one of the nineteenth-century's greatest stars (others include Just So Tobacco, W600 Sporting Life, and T204 Ramly). The offered card of Burkett, who on this card is identified as a Coach for the New York Nationals, displays even wear to the corners and is centered slightly to the right. The blank reverse is clean, with only faint horizontal wrinkling through the centering (not visible on the front). This is an extremely desirable and rare card of Hall of Famer Jesse Burkett from his coaching days, one of the few cards of this significant Hall of Famer ever issued, from this rare 1920s issue.
