1914 B18 Blankets Ty Cobb Red Infield!
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $13,200
Incredibly rare and stunning high-grade example of the "King" of 1914 B18 Blankets: the "Red Infield" variation of Ty Cobb, Detroit A.L. B18s were issued with Egyptienne Straights Cigarettes. The "Red Infields" have always been revered for their extreme rarity. Most collectors have never even seen one. Only examples featuring Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox players are known to exist with Red Infields, and only a few of each at most. Ty Cobb is by far the most desirable of these great tobacco rarities. Presented is an outstanding example, bright and crisp, with extremely bold colors. The centering is superb for B18s (which so often have centering problems). This is the "Honus Wagner" of B18 Blankets, one of fewer than a half-dozen examples known to exist. This extreme rarity would be a worthy centerpiece to any Ty Cobb card collection, type collection, B18 collection, or collection of significant hobby rarities. On the reverse is a weak outline of darkening, which relates to its original packaging (B18s were issued folded), and a few remnants of the original tobacco packaging strip as is occasionally found on particularly well preserved B18 examples (these remnants could be removed as intended if desired). Though the front is well centered with borders visible on all four sides, the reverse is cut in such a way that part of one edge has no border visible. Strong Excellent to Mint condition.
