1916 M101-4 Sporting News #169 Charles "Casey" Stengel PSA NM 7

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,800

Graded NM 7 by PSA. Gorgeous ultra high-grade M101-4 Sporting News example featuring Hall of Famer Casey Stengel in a throwing pose, on one of the very few cards of Stengel ever produced featuring him as a player. This is one of Casey Stengel's most desirable cards and it is very rarely offered, especially in such outstanding condition. The M101-4 Sporting News Casey Stengel is a fascinating and yet slightly overlooked card. Stengel appears in the 1910 T210 Old Mill Tobacco set as a minor leaguer; and his T210 card understandably generates a tremendous amount of attention. But Stengel's M101-4 card is also of enormous significance as this is his very first card as a Major Leaguer! Of special note is the fact that The Sporting News advertisement appears on the reverse, which is extremely desirable; while this card was issued with a blank reverse or with one of many different regional advertisements on the reverse, the M101-4 set has always been referred to as issued by The Sporting News in honor of its most prominent sponsor. This stunning example is perfectly bright and clean, with a flawless surface, outstanding contrast, four sharp corners, and centering very slightly to the bottom (which is likely all that keeps this card from grading higher). Entirely clean blank reverse. This is a superb high-grade example of Casey Stengel from the M101-4 Sporting News set, which would make a significant addition to any world-class vintage card, rookie, or Hall of Fame baseball-card collection.
