Circa 1910 S21 and S22 Murad "Athlete and College Seal" Tobacco Silks Baseball and Football Collection (32)
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $840
Collection of thirty-two S21 and S22 "Athlete and College Seal" silk premiums. In the early part of the century, tobacco companies (such as Murad, in this case) issued "silks" as premiums. The S21 and S22 "Athlete and College Seal" silks each feature the same images but differ in size (S21s measure approximately 5 x 7 inches, while S22s measure approximately 3.5 x 5.5 inches). The design of each silk features a generic college athlete representing one of ten different sports. The thirty-two S21 and S22 silks in this collection consist exclusively of baseball and football figures. The silks all have the factory number printed on the bottom. The collection consists of the following (duplicates in parentheses): One S21 Baseball: Colorado/pitcher. Twenty S22 Baseball: Brown/batter, Chicago/pitcher, Colorado/batter (2), Colorado/pitcher, Columbia/pitcher, Cornell/batter (2), Cornell/pitcher, Dartmouth/pitcher (3), Harvard/batter, Michigan/pitcher (2), Syracuse/batter, Syracuse/pitcher, Texas/batter, West Point/pitcher, and Wisconsin/batter. Three S21 Football: Brown and Colorado (2). Eight S22 Football: Annapolis, Cornell, Harvard, Princeton, Syracuse (2), and Texas (2). Grading silks is difficult simply because they are not traditional cards. For S21 and S22 silks, this collection is very strong! Excellent overall, with normal fraying and wrinkling (which can be ironed flat if desired). Five silks display small areas of staining on the front. This is an extremely attractive collection of these prized tobacco premiums featuring exclusively the prized baseball and football subjects. Total: 32 silks. SOLD FOR $840
