1910 S74 "Colored" Baseball Tobacco Silks Collection (51) Including Ty Cobb and Walter Johnson
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $4,800
Outstanding collection of fifty-one 1910 S74 "Colored" Tobacco Silks (fifty different players plus one duplicate), highlighted by nine Hall of Famers, including Ty Cobb and Walter Johnson. This is a newly discovered group that has never before been seen in the modern collecting world. Each silk has been carefully mounted inside one of three small albums by means of one or two small drops of adhesive (they could likely be very carefully removed if desired). This method of storage for more than one hundred years has preserved them in ideal form as all the silks are bright and crisp, with brilliant colors and little to no fraying. Nine of the silks display minor wrinkles (which can be ironed out to make flat) and one silk has detached from its mount, causing the factory line at top to become separated from the main image area. All fifty-one silks feature advertising for Turkey Red Cigarettes at the bottom. (Note: The "colored" silks were not issued with advertising backs as was the case with the slightly smaller S74 "white" silks.) The nine Hall of Famers included in this collection are Roger Bresnahan, Mordecai Brown, Fred Clarke, Ty Cobb, Johnny Evers, Miller Huggins, Walter Johnson, Rube Marquard, and Bobby Wallace, along with superstar Hal Chase. The three albums which house the silks each measure 3 x 4 inches and are very basic, homemade albums constructed of thin cardboard stock. They display wear to the corners and covers and are overall Vg (three of the back pages have detached from one of the albums). By any measure, S74s represent one of the very best values of all 1910-era baseball tobacco issues. This is a very attractive beautifully preserved original-owner collection of these colorful tobacco premiums, including many key stars, and highlighted by a very sharp example of key silk Ty Cobb. Total: 51 silks. SOLD FOR $4,800
