1915 T214 Victory Tobacco Frank Smith

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,440

The 1915 T214 Victory set is an obscure series of tobacco cards, issued exclusively in the Louisiana area, which is sometimes mistaken for the T206 "White Border" set. Victory Tobacco is one of the few sets which feature players from the Federal League, in addition to featuring players from the National and American leagues. Presented is a rare T214 Victory Tobacco sample card of Frank Smith of Baltimore (Federal League). Smith is a particularly interesting card in that this same pose, with the team designation of "Chicago and Boston," is a scarce card in the T206 set. Victory Tobacco cards have a glossy coated surface which is very susceptible to creasing; that common problem is solely responsible for this card being graded POOR 10 by SGC. The card presents extremely well, with bold colors and a crisp image, despite its technically accurate assigned grade. Only one other example of Smith has ever been graded by SGC (graded FAIR 20). An ideal sample card from this rare issue which would be at home in any Baltimore or prewar-card collection.
