1911 D359 Rochester Baking Chief Bender
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,680
Graded VG+ 45 by SGC. Only two examples grade higher by SGC (both VG/EX 50). Very attractive sample card of Hall of Famer Chief Bender from the 1911 D359 Rochester Baking series. D359s are among the rarest of all 1910-era issues. Produced to commemorate the Athletics’ 1910 Championship season, the set features exclusively Athletics, including manager Connie Mack. Four different companies (Rochester Baking, Williams Baking, Cullivan’s Fireside Tobacco, and blank-backed versions catalogued as E104-1 Nadja) issued the 18-card Philadelphia Athletics set in 1911. The cards measure 1-1/2 x 2-5/8 inches, which is the standard size for tobacco and candy issues, but are considerably rarer than most 1910-era “E” and “T” card issues. This sample is bright and clean, with a striking red background and even wear to the four corners. Light print transfer, perhaps from being stacked while still wet, is present on the front of the card. The reverse is boldly printed and centered to the top, with a small piece of another card showing along the bottom. This is an extremely attractive sample card featuring a desirable Hall of Famer from this rare bakery-card set. SOLD FOR $1,680
