1888 N173 Old Judge Cabinet Jim Mutrie, Manager

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,700

Absolutely stunning N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet example of Jim Mutrie, Manager of New York (#336-2). All N173 Old Judge cabinets are naturally rare, but this is a particularly noteworthy example as it features a manager. Managers tend to jump out as special and unusual in any collection of Old Judges, in part because of the fancy street clothes (as seen here) in which the subjects are usually pictured. They are naturally a very popular subset of Old Judge collecting. This is one of the finest N173 Old Judge cabinets we have ever seen! The image on this card is virtually unimprovable, with extraordinary contrast and tremendous detail. Very bright, crisp, and clean, both front and back, presenting as Near Mint overall. A few almost imperceptible traces of erased writing are visible under close inspection on the blank reverse. Such minor imperfections would not even have to be mentioned in the "old days" of collecting, but are now noted due to the impact on grading by professional grading services. Minor back issues, such as this, usually "come with the territory" with Old Judges, and collectors are very tolerant of this, instead focusing on photo quality, which in the case of the offered example is superb. This is a remarkably striking N173 example, simply stunning in all respects, which would be a highlight in any nineteenth-century-card collection.
