1909-1911 T206 White Border Ray Demmitt - St. Louis Americans Variation
Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $5,100
Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC (submitted by REA). Attractive example of the rare Demmitt, St. Louis Americans, T206 variation, in extremely high grade for this key T206 rarity. Only five T206 examples of Demmitt, St. Louis Americans, have ever been graded higher by SGC (one VG/EX+ 55, three EX 60, and one EX+ 70). Polar Bear was the only company to issue this T206 variation and this fact explains why Demmitt is so difficult to find in high grade. The packaged cards issued with Polar Bear tobacco were not well protected from the accompanying product; thus, almost all Demmitt cards have at least some tobacco staining (as is the case with the offered example, which has light staining against the orange background). Bright and crisp, both front and back, with even wear to the four corners, strong colors, and outstanding centering, just a hint to the top. Free of any creases or wrinkles. This is a exceptionally attractive high-grade example of one of the rarest cards in the classic T206 White Border set. The equivalent SMR value in the assigned grade is $4,800.
The item in this lot is part of the deaccessioned property of a prominent northeast museum which has selected Robert Edward Auctions to handle the sale of donated sportscards and memorabilia in an effort to fund purchases more in line with the mission and goals of the museum. SOLD FOR $5,100
