1909-1911 T206 White Border Partial Set (457 Different)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $27,000

8% grade Vg-Ex to Ex, 77% range in grade from Fr to Vg (averaging Gd), and 15% lesser (including 9% trimmed). Presented is an extremely attractive partial set of T206 White Borders, comprised of 457 of the 524 cards in the set. This partial T206 set is highlighted by dozens of Hall of Famers, including Nap Lajoie, Addie Joss, and Walter Johnson, as well as the Elberfeld (portrait, Washington) and O'Hara (St. Louis) rarities. The sixty-seven missing cards include Wagner, Plank, Magie, and Doyle (the "big 4"), as well as all four Cobbs, Demmitt/St. Louis, Johnson/hands at chest, Kling, all three Mathewsons, Schaefer/Wash., Speaker, all three Youngs, and the forty-eight rare Southern Leaguers. Originally consigned to this auction as a near-complete set of 518 cards, we have broken the collection down into several lots (this being the largest), with the forty-eight rare Southern Leaguers and other missing cards appearing elsewhere in this auction. Although in mixed grade, this collection is extremely pleasing throughout, and includes many condition highlights. Many of the cards grading Fr to Gd in this collection are downgraded due to flaws on the reverse, such as pencil, ink, or paper loss, despite a superior, Vg or better, appearance. This collection could easily serve as the foundation for an outstanding complete set. This is a beautiful T206 partial set in a particularly desirable grade offering an exceptional collecting value. While the backs are almost all Piedmont and Sweet Caporal, also included are thirteen Polar Bear, eight Sovereign, five El Principe de Gales, four Tolstoi, three American Beauty, three Cycle, three Old Mill, and two Brown Hindu (Gilbert, Gd, and Spade, Fr). The Hall of Famers and key cards from this partial set are each graded individually below. We have selected fourteen cards to be graded by SGC.

(EX 60), Willis/bat (EX 60), and Willis/throw (Vg). Interesting additional note: the Perring card in this partial set has the ink stamp of legendary pioneer collector Lawrence Kurzok on the reverse!

This is a beautiful partial set of T206 White Borders, the most popular and classic set of the era, in an extremely consistent condition and modest technical grade, representing one of the most outstanding values in all of vintage-card collecting. The equivalent SMR value for just the fourteen graded cards (factoring in the five half grades at the lower whole-grade level and not including the 443 ungraded cards!) is $4,780. Total: 457 cards.

The items in this lot are part of the deaccessioned property of a prominent northeast museum which has selected Robert Edward Auctions to handle the sale of donated sportscards and memorabilia in an effort to fund purchases more in line with the mission and goals of the museum.
