1911 T205 Gold Border Addie Joss
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,320
Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Extremely attractive example of Addie Joss from the classic T205 Gold Border set. This is a stunning card and in a very desirable grade for a T205 Joss, which is a particularly significant card in T205 because he is both a key Hall of Famer and also one of the rarest cards in the set. This is an even more significant card than most collectors realize, as the T205 Joss is actually a memorial card. Joss tragically passed away from meningitis on April 14, 1911, cutting short one of baseball's greatest careers. Few collectors realize that the text on the reverse of the card specifically refers to his death in 1911 as a "great loss to the game," closing with "He was a faithful player liked by his team mates and respected by the public, many thousands of whom attended his funeral." All Addie Joss T205s have the same text on the reverse. Bright, crisp, and clean, with brilliant colors and perfect registration. The card displays four square corners showing minor white touches and is centered very slightly to the top with a natural diamond cut visible along the top and bottom edges. A very tiny crease on the left edge, as well as two spots of chipping along the right edge, are responsible for the modest assigned grade. The reverse of the card is also perfectly clean with bold blue text and excellent centering. This is a very sharp T205, and an extraordinary example of one of the most important and desirable cards ever issued of legendary Hall of Famer Addie Joss. SOLD FOR $1,320
