1959-1963 Hartland Football Statues Partial Set (17) Plus 4 Boxes
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,500
Addendum: Please note that the following four statues are MISSING their original face masks: 1) Philadelphia (lineman); 2) Redskins (running back), 3) Vikings (running back), and 4) John Arnett. The condition report for each of those four figures DOES NOT take the missing face mask into consideration.
Collection of seventeen different Hartland football statues produced between the years 1959 and 1963. This collection was assembled over many years by an advanced collector with condition in mind, and as such, most of the figures offered here rank among the finest examples we have ever seen let alone handled. Hartland football statues are scarcer than their baseball counterparts and this is one of the largest offerings we have seen at public auction. In 1959, following on the heels of the company's popular baseball issue, Hartland began production of a football set. The first two figures off the assembly line in 1959 were Colts quarterback Johnny Unitas and Los Angeles Rams running back John Arnett. They were followed in subsequent years by generic figures (a running back and a lineman) for each of the then fourteen teams in the NFL, with a total of thirty figures eventually representing a complete set of football Hartlands. Each Hartland football statue was packaged in a box very similar in design to that used for the company's baseball line.
This collection is comprised of seventeen different Hartland football statues, four of which are housed in their original boxes. It should be noted that each of the generic statues originally came with a decal-transfer sheet containing numbers so that the buyer could decorate it with the number of his favorite player. Many of the statues in this collection display an applied number, with a few also bearing a piece of tape on the underside of the base identifying the player who wore that number at the time. All but one of the original boxes (Philadelphia Eagles) offered here contains both a decal-transfer sheet and a Hartland product brochure, as issued.
The collection is comprised of the following: 1) Johnny Unitas (Nr-Mt); 2) John Arnett (Vg, crack in the green base); 3) Philadelphia Eagles running back in original box (figure is Nr-Mt to Mt; box has tears to the cellophane window, otherwise Ex-Mt); 4) Philadelphia Eagles lineman (Ex-Mt); 5) Los Angeles Rams running back (Ex-Mt); 6) Los Angeles Rams lineman (Ex); 7) Cleveland Browns running back (Nr-Mt); 8) Cleveland Browns lineman (Nr-Mt); 9) Washington Redskins running back (Ex); 10) Baltimore Colts lineman (Ex, with tape on underside of base); 11) New York Giants lineman (face guard partially detached, tape on underside of base, otherwise Nr-Mt); 12) St. Louis Cardinals lineman (Nr-Mt, tape on underside of base); 13) San Francisco 49ers lineman (Nr-Mt); 14) Pittsburgh Steelers lineman (one foot detached from base, tape on underside of base, otherwise Nr-Mt); 15) Pittsburgh Steelers running back in original box (figure is Nr-Mt; box is complete with protective cardboard flap covering intact cellophane window, Ex-Mt); 16) Minnesota Vikings running back in original box (figure is Nr-Mt; box is complete with protective cardboard flap covering intact cellophane window, but with a missing top flap, Vg); and 17) Chicago Bears lineman in original box (figure is Nr-Mt; box is complete with cardboard flap covering torn cellophane window, Vg). Total: 17 football Hartlands (four in their original boxes).
