Extraordinary 1958-1963 Hartland Statues Complete Set In Original Boxes with Original Tags!

Starting Bid - $4,000, Sold For - $15,600

In all our years, we have never before seen a complete set of Hartland baseball players offered with all 18 boxes and all 17 tags! A set of truly high quality statues (such as that included here) is tough enough, but as any Hartland collector will confirm, the boxes and the tags are EXTREMELY rare. Complete collections with boxes and tags are almost impossible to assemble, and are just never offered in set form. This is a first for REA, and looking back at various auction archives, we think this complete set with tags and boxes offering may be a first in the history of all of Hartland collecting. This remarkable collection was assembled over a period of many years by a true connoisseur, who took great pride in attempting to assemble the finest complete Hartland set possible, including the boxes and tags. He succeeded and his efforts are presented here!

This remarkable complete collection includes all eighteen Hartland baseball statues, plus the "Minor Leaguer" and two examples of the "Little Leaguer." Each of the eighteen player statues is housed in its original box and comes complete with its original tag. (Please note there are only seventeen tags, as opposed to eighteen, because no tag was issued for Maris.) Included among the highlights of this collection are one of only a few known original Dick Groat boxes, two boxes (Mantle and Musial) that are complete with their original front-cardboard flaps that protect the original cellophane window (these flaps were supposed to be removed by store owners when placing the statues on store shelves), and two examples of the "Little Leaguer" figure, one of which remains housed in its original blister pack. This collection was assembled over many years by an advanced collector with condition in mind, and as such, most of the figures offered here rank among the finest examples we have ever handled or seen.

The Hartland Company's series of baseball statues, issued from 1958 to 1963, are the most sought after sports personality figures ever made. They are so well crafted that the fans of each player can easily recognize their favorite by its stance or pose alone. Each statue was originally designed to retail for $1.98 to $2.50. In 1958 dollars that equates to about $20.00 to $25.00 today, so it understandable that most purchases of Hartlands were for special occasions, and most kids had no more than a few of them. There are numerous rarities in this set, as the later-issued figures such as Groat and Colavito were issued in far more modest numbers than the earlier figures. The complete set of eighteen stars in the set are as follows: Aaron, Aparicio, Banks, Berra, Colavito, Drysdale, Fox, Groat, Killebrew, Mantle, Maris, Mathews, Mays, Musial, Ruth, Snider, Spahn, and Williams.

All of the figures offered here are in spectacular NEAR-MINT to MINT condition and display just as they did when removed from their boxes decades ago. Each figure is housed in its original box and, with the exception of the Roger Maris statue, comes complete with its original tag. (As mentioned previously, the Maris statue was never issued with a tag.) Accordingly, if a figure came with an accessory, such as a bat or catcher's mask, that accessory is included here as well. This is a truly comprehensive collection and, as noted above, the first such complete offering (statues, boxes, and tags) that we can ever recall seeing offered privately or at public auction. This is an extraordinary collection! A complete inventory list, with condition reports for each statue, box, and tag, can be found on our website. Total: 56 items (18 different Hartland baseball statues, 18 boxes, 17 tags, plus the "Minor Leaguer" and two examples of the "Little Leaguer").
