1911 T3 Turkey Red #9 Ty Cobb

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,600

Graded GOOD+ 35 by SGC (submitted by REA). Presented is one of vintage-card collecting's most recognizable icons and the key card of the 1911 Turkey Red Tobacco cabinet-card series: #9 Ty Cobb. Besides being the most valuable card in the set, it is also one of the most desirable and striking of all Ty Cobb cards. This example is bright and crisp, with extremely bold colors, no creases, some light edge and corner wear, and outstanding centering. The card shares many of the qualities of a Vg-Ex card but has been downgraded due to staining in the borders and a tiny area of flaking in the lower right image area. Technically in "Good to Very Good" condition, this card has an overall appearance superior to its assigned grade. The checklist reverse is bright and clean, with a small area of excess paper visible on the left side. This is a very attractive example of card #9 Ty Cobb, in an extremely desirable grade. The classic Turkey Red set is considered by many to be the most beautiful and well-made tobacco set ever issued. The T3 Ty Cobb has always been and will always be in high demand, especially a relatively affordable mid-grade example such as this that presents so much better than its technical grade.

The item in this lot is part of the deaccessioned property of a prominent northeast museum which has selected Robert Edward Auctions to handle the sale of donated sportscards and memorabilia in an effort to fund purchases more in line with the mission and goals of the museum.
