1911 T3 Turkey Red #8 Fred Clarke Proof Card

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $8,400

Spectacular T3 Turkey Red proof card of Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famer Fred Clarke. All T3 Turkey Red proof cards which exist today first surfaced in the hobby in the mid 1970s. These cards came from a find directly from the family of the printer. When family members of the printer showed up at one of the very first card shows in New York City (which at the time was held at District Center 65) this cache of cards (which included proof cards from the T206, T3 Turkey Red Baseball, and T9 Turkey Red Boxer sets) was instantly recognized as so special that they were immediately given a table by the show promoters to display and sell cards from the find. Included were approximately seventy T3 proof cards (all different and each unique), which have long since been dispersed throughout the collecting world. This card is perfectly crisp and clean, both front and back, with flawless brilliant colors, and very light, even corner wear. Blank reverse. Excellent overall appeaance. Encapsulated "Authentic" by SGC (SGC does not assign numerical grades to proof cards). This Fred Clarke proof is an extraordinary sample from this incredibly significant legendary hobby find and is worthy of the finest prewar-card collection.

The item in this lot is part of the deaccessioned property of a prominent northeast museum which has selected Robert Edward Auctions to handle the sale of donated sportscards and memorabilia in an effort to fund purchases more in line with the mission and goals of the museum.
