1930s-1960s Sports-Photo Collection from the New York Sun Newspaper Archves (718)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,300

Collection of 718 sports photos originating from the archives of the Sun, a New York newspaper that was published between the years 1833 to 1950 (in 1950 the Sun merged with the New York World-Telegram. The collection is comprised of 593 baseball photos and 125 football photos dating from the 1930s through the early 1960s. The overwhelming majority of the baseball photos (523) are stamped "Sun" on the reverse and date from the 1930s. The Sun examples were used as stock photos for whenever they needed an image of the respective athlete in the paper and most include a date on the reverse. The remaining 70 baseball photos are original Associated Press photos, most of which retain their paper news captions. Not surprisingly, the majority of the photos relate to New York sports teams. Duplicates are included for many of the players represented here, however, oftentimes the duplicates capture the player in a different pose (i.e. batting, fielding, portrait, etc). All of the Sun photos capture individual players, but many of the Associated Press baseball photos picture more than one player or action shots. Unless otherwise noted, all of the Sun photos measure 6.5 x 8.5 inches. The majority of the Associated Press and football photos are 8 x 10 inches, with a few slightly smaller (either 5 x 7 or 7 x 9 inches). The photos range in grade from Fr to Ex-Mt, averaging Vg, with most displaying minor handling wear, including minor creases and/or edge tears.
